I'm not sure exactly.

However, I see that sort of thing come up when a syn operation has been
done, but the folders cache hasn't been updated. So, it represents the
count on the server, but the local folder cache hasn't been updated yet.

Just a moment ago, for my TBBETA folder, the Unread column showed
'1 <*>'. This meant there was a new message on the server but it hadn't
been downloaded to the local cache.

I selected the folder which caused another sync operation. The folder
changed to it's 'unread messages within' status and the Unread column
showed just '1'.
