It definitely doesn't work.
When using the Maintenance center, the duplicates are found and the
folder message count appropriately drops with the previous number in
brackets.

However, this isn't sync'd with the server. As a result, the duplicates
remain at the next sync operation.
Arghh!!!
I have 3000 duplicates in a folder after moving messages from a POP
account to my IMAP account. Since there was no visual queue that the
move took place, I tried again (and gave up not realizing that the
messages were copied rather than moved), hence all the dupes.
