This is actually bad behaviour on the part of the IMAP client. Mark Cripsin (one of the authors of the IMAP 4rev1 RFC) strongly suggests against making the assumption that the server can handle multiple connections at once. If you plan on support it, it should be configurable. I quit using thunderbird because it was slow, cumbersome, and had a fair few basic features missing.
