There is. The sender only has to activate 'View' / 'Follow Up:' and
he/she will be able to delete references if his/her mail should not
appear threaded / as new message.

I know where your message was directed to, but that's only a
work around, a nice add-on, not a solution. The solution is to make
people use their tool instead of having the emergency box ready and
applying the bandage every time somebody tried to apply the screw with
a hammer into the wall :-)
