Isn't it supposed to be that emoticons are recognised as such if and only if they have a space on either side of them. This helps to minimize the possibility of smileys appearing in the middle of words etc. Though the character sequences may be used in situations where not intended, the required spaces makes it less likely that unwanted triggering occurs. Example: -=] Allie [=- I didn't want the smiley there and yet it's there. The required space after the initial '-' would have prevented this. This is the system that Miranda and I think Trillian uses.
