Just an idea.  It may not be related at all.  But what I did was
cut all entries from all the msl files in the images folder.  I
pasted each set of entries into separate temp files in case I
wanted them back.  I then saved the original msl files which
were blank except for the top portions down to line 9, I think.
After a restart of TB, all was well.

My issue was with auto downloading but your problems may be
related.  It sounds like TB may be getting conflicting info on
which rogue image to display.  Since you were all involved with
this early on, your image entries may be very much like mine
were.

That one screenshot of Allie's message seems to destroy my
theory and support the bad rendering idea. It's all black except
for the transparent portions.  Then again, if TB were loading
multiple images atop one another, wouldn't they appear solid
black minus the transparent parts?
