Regarding the opening of the statusbar upwards, that is common behaviour of Windows controls. If the submenu doesn't fit at the right it is shown on the left. If the drop-down doesn't fit below it is shown on top. May be unintuitive but that's what it will be forever I suppose. > Scrolling doesn't change the size at all.
