Prepare the other installation and then overwrite that alternative installation directory with the contents of your regular install. You now have parallel installations that are configured the same way. Set the test client to leave messages on the server. When one install is getting significantly different to the other, do another overwrite. The registry settings aren't really that important to the working of either installs.
