Seems like you need a decent monitor. Cleartype enhances font
appearance. It very nicely, deals with the main problem I have with
viewing fonts on LCD monitors. If it's not working on your monitor
then don't use it. It's optional and can also be adjusted. With or
without cleartype, some fonts render particularly nice while others
don't. That depends not only on cleartype but the monitor *and* the
resolution it's running at.

BTW, I bought my LCD monitor since it does give a sharper and flat
picture. It's tremendously space efficient and generates much less
heat.
