Yes, I click on the task bar, select the IMAP request that's stalled
and hit Del. I rather not have to do this but it does help from time
to time.

Typically, for a few seconds. Sometimes it stays up for longer even
though there are no active tasks.

I currently disconnect after 5 seconds... I tried all sorts of
combinations and this seems about right for me. Anything less is a
pain because TB! complains about server disconnects when you try and
do something other than read messages. I connect to my server via 54g
WLAN and switch.

Taking your suggestion for a CC button I like an IMAP toolbar... CC,
connect, disconnect, syncronise, manage folders etc.
