Over here, whenever I want to save an attachment right out of TB, I have to choose the extension manually. We researched this a long time ago, and the cause is my Chinese Windows, which chooses random extensions. Take a look at the Save dialogue when you save them, and tell us what extension you see. I'm not saying that it happens only with C-Win, but you may be facing the same OS-based problem, as a .doc file is not a web archive.
