The "unread" coloring (bold) in threading is a bit different. It simply
indicates that "somewhere" in the thread is an unread message.

I'm using the keyboard for reading mails and jump to new mails via ...
uhmmm ... the keyboard shortcuts for that (my hands know that shortcut, my
brain does not). The context menu says CTRL + ALT + left & CTRL + ALT +
right to move to next/previous unread. Maybe that helps you?

I couldn't live without threading, really. :-)
