Actually, I'm using IMAP the same way you describing - without any
synchronization and it fits all my needs.
These options are needed if you don't have permanent connection, in
example if you use dial-up. With synchronization TB! could act as
offline client - it checks flags and downloads needed parts of
messages in batch, so you can go offline and read them later. Without
syncrhonization while disconnected you'll be able to read only already
retrieved messages.
