Maybe it has to do with the "themes" capability of Windows XP. I don't
know.

I see what you mean here on my system, too, though not as drastic as it is
in the screenshots you provided. Does it improve when you change the
background color of your Windows to a lighter or darker color, maybe? The
"anti-aliasing" that is done on the icon art may be dependent on the color.
