It's not often I reply to myself but in this case I must! The original message was correct, the new tabs _are_ connected to the VF's. I tested this by deleting the VF's and reinstalling them. In the case of the first one reinstalled I had to close and reopen TB before the tab appeared but thereafter the tab appeared as soon as I created the VF. Strange!
