This is simply the Search toolbar of the message viewer window, which is docked next to its Standard toolbar by default. For some reason, the Search toolbar then takes the initial focus, when you open the window initially. Obviously, the focus should be on the message body. Note that this does NOT happen when you undock the Search toolbar, or turn it off. (I always turn it off, I rather just use the normal Find command. Btw, turning off this toolbar only works since 3.5.0.16 or so :)
