Still not the same behaviour as before, and the empty lines persist
(i.e. the refresh doesn't happen in the way as before). But my issue
seems to be fixed: I again adjust the message list so that a quarter
of the next message line is seen. When I click on that quarter, the
list moves up. Previously I clicked on the fully visible message, but
that is a minor difference.

So I can again leave the mouse at the same place and click through the
messages using the preview pane. All is fine (except for the minor
cosmetic issue of the empty lines when I delete messages). Thanks to
the developers for listening.
