I move from unread message far more often than I search the list. Why
cripple the ease with which I can move from message to message using so
that I can start a quick search that starts with 'n' by typing 'n'
first.

If I need to do a quick search I'm quite happy to type the search string
after placing the cursor in the string entry field for the search bar
that I keep always visible.

The idea behind shortcuts is to make frequently executed tasks easier
and not the other way around. I could use some other shortcut like ','
or something like that, but I prefer 'N' and 'N' works the same with
other similar apps I use. The consistent behaviour helps a lot!
