Yes, I understand better now, and I can confirm this behavior - occasionally - in folders with many messages where you scroll down from somewhere towards the top to the very bottom. The gap seems to vary, and the gap disappears when I go to another folder and then return to the folder where I am already at the last message in the list. Definitely a bizarre behavior, but not really a major problem in respect to performance. Personally, I would have assigned it a very low priority rather than "normal" priority.
