I don't actually object to the occasional use of smilies at the end of a paragraph or message to indicate mood but I do find it quite offensive (irrational, I know) to have to navigate through a sea of :junk: :pop: :wow: :giraffe: rubbish: pantechnicon: random characters that sometimes make messages quite difficult to follow, particularly when reading and replying to them from outside of TB! where, of course they have no meaning at all except to convince the recipient of your message that you have suffered some form of brain slippage.

I did ask the question in this list some time ago about whether it was possible to filter out these :excrescences: at source with some form of scripting - but I think this could be difficult.
