I have been learning a lot on this long thread, and I think I now know
that The Bat! "chooses" for me, whatever I have earlier selected.

Like you, I did think that I was using the "default choices."

You see, I am still learning!

Maybe it's a "politically correct" thing? I seem to recall that a
number of people in the world like to note that anyone who lives on
either the North or the South American continent could accurately call
himself/herself an American. It has been so traditional in my country,
the United States of America, over the years, to have its name
shortened to "America," that I have had a learning curve to understand
the sensitivities of people who object to that. The same with the
traditional reference to U.S. nationals as "Americans."

But, if I had to guess, that would be the background for the term,
"us-ascii." :)
