You can open a message from the messagelist & mark "show messagelist" from the "view" menu. Its almost the same as the messagelist with the preview pane. However, I'm trying this now for a couple of hours, and the shutdown I see now is maybe 1 second slower than the normal shutdown, no way it would be 30 or 40 seconds.
