If you're sending over Exchange 2003 with MAPI, headers like References,
In-Reply-To, X-Mailer and others will be stripped and partly replaced by
the MS versions (Thread-Index for example).

Maybe it is only our Exchange server configuration, but I've yet to see a
message processed by Exchange that would contain References and In-Reply-To
(and Outlook does produce these headers when it send over SMTP itself).
