I have noticed a slowdown as well with the 3.6 beta cycle. Have you noticed that, with the pictures in the header column, that a message with a small header vs a large header, that the picture gets redrawn as it shrinks or grows to the new header size. It may not be noticeable on a fast machine, but on my slow one it is very easily seen.
