I don't have enough folders, nested or otherwise, to attempt what you're
describing.

However, I do see something similar in the message list. Open a threaded
folder and expand all threads. Scroll to the bottom of the list and
collapse a couple threads that are fully in view. The list view doesn't
readjust itself to fill the space that's left after collapsing the
thread.
