There is a way.
But you have to cheat to do it.

The way I do it, is by creating a new empty message.
Put it in the outbox.
Move it to the folder you want to rethread a message.
Rethread the message
Delete the empty message and your rethreaded message is root for the
new thread.

Of course you can do the same by copying a message to your rethreading
folder and deleting it afterwards, but I prefer a new message.
