Most of the time it isn't quite random.
I've been doing some Alt-clicking on messages in my tbbeta folder. (180
days of mail, 14450 msgs at the moment)
Focus turned on a different message quite often. Most of the time it
was set just at the oldest message in the selection.

Been trying something else:
Another folder: 44 msgs.
Select the second msg in view and alt-click
focus drops to the new second msg.

Select the 40th message in view (actually it's not in view, as I've
got to scroll down), alt-click and focus drops to the new 40th message
in view.

This explains why in my tbbeta folder focus dropped to the bottom, I
was checking around three months ago, somewhere around the 7000th
message and none of my selections had that many matches. ;-)

I'm reading in preview
full height account tree
threading by references, though that doesn't matter as the results are
consistent with threading off.
