Actually, IIRC, it was only the fear of it making TB insecure
that got the feature shot down. I recall the final conclusion
being that there was no danger. Not the same case here,
however.

The real problem I see with the argument for and against this
feature is the fact that it never develops beyond the bickering
stage. It seems to me that the "against" side believes the
"pro" side to be ignorant of security issues while the "pro"
side" believes the opposition is against anything that isn't
plain text.

I think the true issue for the "pro" side is that they have a
use for offsite images being displayed and feel they don't need
to be protected by what amounts to annoyances. Imagine if TB
simply blocked all attachments from being opened directly...one
just has to jump through a few hoops to get screwed. Same here.

The strong point that the opposition has is that a simple on /
off switch that toggles the allowing of offsite images is just
like a secure / insecure button. Think about it. Any global
option like that counts for all messages, not just the
legitimate. Also, a right-click "show image" option isn't a
whole lot better...still two clicks but only one image! Any
argument for this feature should start here. Just remember that
even with proof of security the roguemoticon feature failed to
make the cut.

One last note, after wanting this feature for several years I've
found that very few of the images in html email added much to
the message content. If they did, I was already on my way to the
site anyway. One of the few exceptions to this are those html
emails that are all one spliced image. If 99% of the world
didn't use crap like OE, perhaps those companies would learn to
write.
