vitalie,

For some of us... My strategy: have the OS in a hard drive partition by itself. That way, you can reinstall it without loosing everything. The primary reason for not using MS software: the above strategy does not save you from loosing everything, because MS software will wipe stored data clean when being reinstalled. Yes, if you are mightily intrepid, it is possible to save yourself somewhat from this fate, but lesser souls use other software that probably can be used without being reinstalled, or can at least be returned to its previous state with less mighty efforts. Secondly, have a second larger empty hard drive where you back up everything from your working hard drive. When the working hard drive dies, install your OS on the backup hard drive, restore your backups and be on your way. Don't be fooled, you will not be saved from a huge amount of labor in the midst of great aggravation by these measures, but at least full recovery from disaster is possible. It is also wise to have extra backups on CD. Six months ago I had all three of my hard drives die in a matter of weeks. Yes, I did have CD backups too. So here I am today with all my many years of accumulated work in place. Loosing all that is a disaster that really must be avoided, for me anyway. In my experience, Linux is harder than Windows to recover fully using any strategy that I know of. -- Gleason Using The Bat! 3.72.07 (Beta) on Windows XP Version 5.1 Build 2600.
