this is what I am talking about :-)

Go to scheduller, create new task and add action "Check for update", where
select "notification only". Close this task and in select "Execute task
now" in context menu select. Now You will see what I expect, if will be
"notification only" selected in Preferences and checking update will be
manually started via "Help | Check for update".
