It uses both. Quoting gmail instruction:

smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587

In my The Bat! When I change connection settings for SMTP the value of
the "port" field changes to 4433. No idea why. 100% reproducible.
