I did run the maintenance center and got some of the same messages, so
then I ran the maintenance center, account by account, folder set by
folder set. Finally, everything cleared up after I did the following
steps (I cannot tell you if any of the steps was a "key" in the
solution - sorry):

1. Removed some huge messages with attachments of clusters of graphics.
2. Removed a series of messages with good sized .doc attachments
(saved the attachments, of course)
3. Revised the filters to send incoming messages to separate folders
rather than subfolders under the inbox.

Cleaned out more of the inbox (was 105 or so, now is under 50).

The combination of the above cleared the error message up.

I am using a combo of IMAP (aol) and popmail (gmail and yahoo). The
error seemed to be the messages and attachments in the gmail account,
which is by far the busiest on my pc.

Thank you for your help, Roelof. I had never used the maintenance
center before (blush...).
