None of the definitions I found googling for FQDN say anything about the
ending dot, they just define it as 'hostname.top-level-domain'. AFAICR,
the ending dot may be just a 'syntax requirement' when configuring
certain DNS software, so that it will not automatically append the local
domain. But I'm no expert on this and you may be right.
