I'd actually write the rule like this:
- space always terminates the link
- if the first character before URI is <,{,[,( then >,},],) followed
  by any non-alphanumeric or _ terminates the link (don't bother
  counting braces inside the link, just have any closing brace
  followed by space/punctuation mark the end).
