That is the way it should work. Also, when the focus is on an individual message, ctrl-m should mark it read. Useful if you don't use the preview screen. But for some of us, ctrl-m won't work regardless unless you move to a different folder and back. It might be this is happening when the program starts with the focus on a folder. Ctrl-m doesn't work until you move to a different folder. That is a theory for right now, I haven't tested it yet. Users who immediately move to a different folder would miss seeing it.
