I tried against the tip and got:
 patch -p1 < ~/prot_mem.patch

I fixed up the rejections and compiled it. It does boot, but ends up

So just in case it was something on my side, I applied
your patch to 1.7 - where  it applies cleanly.
With 1.7 + your patch, the E820 looks correct now:
