There's a slight niggle with this. I've been using it for a while now
and it plays havoc with <g> and <wide smile> type comments.

If you change the two marked '*' to '+', it works better (although
still not perfect). Of course, it will then fluff jam quoted stuff
from other clients, like ">he said..." with no space.
