No work around.
'Require MD5' option is only a 'Don't authenticate if CRAM-MD5 is not
offered' option.
If the server announces to be capable of CRAM-MD5 for
SMTP-authentication The Bat! will use it in any case, regardless of
this option checked or not.
The Bat! tries to choose the most secure authentication method
offered, which is CRAM-MD5 if the server announces it in it's
greeting.

Ask your ISP why they let the server announce MD5-capabilities if it
does not work.
