Dear readers from 'TB! off Topic List', W2k with SP2 is a fine OS when it's setup properly. To archive this it's important to make some additional adjustments to the OS. But this requires that you really understand what your doing otherwise you will keeping installing W2k over and over again.
As I'm not very clever on these things I want to make use of this community's 'power of knowledge'. I'm persuaded that many other users here like to take this same advantage of optimizing there System. So please see this thread as a kind of training for a more stable and secure operation of your working tool - your Computer. I want to call on those members with any knowledge on 'proper Setup of W2k' to give there help to those with 'less to no experience'. I Cross post this also to TB!tech as I'm not sure where it's best discussed. Marck P., could you please give your opinion? Thank you! To make a start I like to put up a few questions that come across while setting up my System from scratch (you sure have being following this thread <mid:19670078237.20021020175238@;EddieCastelli.com>. I split the interest into following topics: Topics: + A:Recovery - making a basic recovery System - making a recovery to continue where you broke down + B:Security - Setting up different users with different restrictions - Some applications may only work for certain users + C:General Knowledge - different questions related to the behavior of W2k (e.g. why W2k need this Directory, this file etc.) Questions: A: My last crash I could not recover due to the fact that I didn't have any recovery disc. - How and when should a recovery disc be made? B: I need to set up three user - the Admin, myself, a third user and a Public user. - The admin is clear - he has all aver access. - For myself I don't want to give me all over access in case someone looks over my shoulder while logging in - you know what I mean - I hope! * all application can be used * Internet ok (this implies that I can start dial up a Connection) * no SW installation * no PW change (only the Admin) * can't see and find other users setup on the System - a third user should be set up (call him developer). I don't want to give him too much access. * only some application can be used * no Internet connection * use of the Apache Server * use of CD Rom 'but' no other External drives e.g. USB HD * no SW installation * no PW change (only the Admin) * can't see and find other users setup on the System * can't access the 'program files' directory - the public user has the most restriction. * only some application can be used (e.g. Games, language Dictionary etc.) * no Internet connection * no Apache Server * no use of CD Rom and/or other External drives * no SW installation * no PW change (only the Admin) * can't see and find other users setup on the System * can only access the 'public' directory that is made for him specific. C: When Installing some Applications then a Directory with a long Number String is created and not deleted after setup. These directories are created under '/Program Files/InstallShield Installation Information/'. * What is this for and must this stay there or can it be deleted? So folks I hope to start with this is good enough! Have a nice day :-) -- best regards Eddie Powered by <The Bat!> v1.61 under Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 PGP (public) is available: www.EddieCastelli.com/pgpkey/ ________________________________________________________ Current version is 1.61 | "Using TBTECH" information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
