I'm not sure what you are doing wrong, but I can tell you what I have done
which seems to be successful:

I use separate filters according the item which is to be searched, for
example: Filter1 called 'Spamkill - sender', detects by 'Originator'. The
'signal strings' are then, one line at a time, all the addresses I do not
want mail from ( for more general coverage I usually use only the part
including '@' and what follows it. e.g. @uvwxyz.com)

Filter2 called 'Spamkill - subject', detects by 'Subject'. The 'signal
strings' then lists, one line at a time, all the key words or key phrases
that I want it to reject on. (You have to be careful not to use any words
that your legitimate mail might use)

I have found that this works very well and I now very seldom receive any
spam. Any new address which comes through I just copy and past in the
filter, or add another key word in the other filter.

Good luck.
