I don't disagree, this kind of situation can probably be seen when the
disk runs out of space after expanding the temp files. I'd suggest a
different way of handling it.
Maybe something like:
1. Check disk space
2. expand temp files to temp location
3. build new messages.tbb file
4. rename old messages.tbb file to messages.old
5. move new messages.tbb file over
6. on failure, resort back to old file, else remove messages.old
