Perhaps the focus had accidentally slipped to the message list before
you hit Delete. In this case, the text in the preview pane would have
remained visibly selected. The only visual clue of the change of focus
is that the message selection highlight in the message list changes from
(on my PC) gray to blue.
In case you didn't realize, the deleted messages would only have been
moved to the Trash folder and can easily be retrieved in the case of
such accidents.
