 Actually, the key-combos do work. They are just not well-documented.
 If you know  the position on a US-keyboard, it's probably similar on
 a German KB (not the same though :-/)
 Here are some:

 standard           German
 
 Ctrl-[             Ctrl-ß
 Ctrl-]             Ctrl-´
 Ctrl-/             Ctrl-#
 
 If you know about one key-combo, try around a little and you're bound
 to find the German (or any other international version) of it. The
 Ctrl/Shift/Alt keys are always the same (except that you can use
 AltGr for Ctrl-Alt optionally)
