Short answer: There is a program for Windows that is similar to
Linux's "Sendmail" called VPOP3, so you can bypass those awful SMTP
servers that ISPs supply.
Long answer:
I think I understand your problem (certainly the first one) and have
a
possible solution. Check out http://www.pscs.co.uk/vpop3
This neat program VPOP3 is mainly for the likes of home networks or
small offices, but it has a handy feature that I use for sending
mail.
It's a POP3/SMTP server for Windows basically. Not that I use the
POP3
part of it...
The main point is that VPOP3 will allow "MX Sending" which
essentially
means it *itself* is an SMTP server. Suppose this program is
installed
on your PC, and is the same PC as the one with TB installed. All you
do is replace the SMTP setting with 127.0.0.1 - which is always the
address of your own machine. Rather than have it use an SMTP server
itself, you can tell VPOP3 to send the mail directly to the
destination using MX records, cutting out the middle man ISP. No more
unreliable SMTP servers, no more changing the setting when you switch
ISP (because most ISPs will only allow you to access their SMTP
server
if you're dialed into them). Not certain if this is what you're
looking for, but it's worth mentioning as it was a godsend for me!
