Oh. In your original post I thought you meant you tapped the new
message button directly after selecting the group name, without first
highlighting all the members. My mistake.

Yes, if you miss the additional step of selecting all the members before 
hitting 
the new message button; doing that puts all the individual addresses 
in rather than just the group name. Or at least, in my TB! version it 
does.

However, Miguel's method is more elegant.
