gmail works fine in all email clients. Just set it up once to activate the POP server. Then you should never need to start a web browser again (until you create another gmail address). BUT there is still the problem of IP address. Every so often, you get "web login required" messages in your email client error logs and the only way to fix it is to actually login with a web browser. It is a real pain with VPNs (I use whichever one gets a connection that doesn't drop and it's not always the same one) or even IP addresses in different countries without a VPN at all. Nobody else seems to play these games with IP addresses.
