You may want to take a look at MS Knowledgebase article Q188250 at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/2/50.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0
If that's indeed the problem, there's probably no easy workaround
except using XRay or its equivalent to take out the Sender from the
header.
OTOH, if your alternative smtp server works just fine, there seems
to be no compelling reason to fix this.
