It will happen if you click on a column that is too big to fit in the
current screen. Try clicking on the subject when selecting a new
message to read. To get back, you can also use the left arrow key
with the message list pane in focus.

If I remember correctly, Lief Gregory reported this quite some time
ago. It doesn't get much press. I think overall it is a good
behaviour, if a bit inconvenient at times.

Well, not really a fix, just a work around. See above.

It will happen with both. You probably notice it with the threads
expanded since, in threaded view, the first column's width is
variable. So you are more likely to push a column off to the right.
