Wait a minute. Whether I get a link sent to me whcih points to a file
or I get the file as an email attachment, is the same security risk:
either I click on it or not. The only difference is that it reduces
traffic on the LAN (or WAN, for that matter).

Instead of requiring the sender to uplaod the file to the web (which a
corporation might forbid due to security reasons), FTP could be used
to download the file from the other drive on the LAN/WAN. And what's
the difference to the links? If I need the file, I will still have to
open it. Only, with the FTP, I have to download (duplicate) it onto my
designated drive first.
No, the link idea is good. I have never seen it work, but I like it
and see no special security reasons to forbid it.
