Nope, you can't 'bind' it in this way. This particular
behaviour of the cursor is called 'free caret', as I've
learned here, and I complained about it too, wanting (and
expecting) my cursor to behave just like you dexcribe.
Although I am slowly getting used to this free caret, I'm
not an advocate, and I believe the feature shoould be an
option, not an obligation.
Put it on your wish list for v2.0...
Your other question I'll leave for more accomplished users.
